The Origins of Computers (C1 Level)

The Origins of Computers The history of computers is a fascinating journey that began long before modern laptops, smartphones, and artificial intelligence became part of everyday life. Although the first electronic computers appeared in the twentieth century, the idea of creating machines capable of performing calculations is much older. One of the earliest devices used for calculation was the abacus , which appeared thousands of years ago in ancient civilizations. It allowed people to perform basic mathematical operations more efficiently. Centuries later, mathematicians and inventors began imagining machines that could perform calculations automatically. In the nineteenth century, the British mathematician Charles Babbage designed what became known as the Analytical Engine . Although he never completed the machine, his design contained many ideas that would later become fundamental to modern computers. It was supposed to have a memory, a processing unit, and a system of instru...

The House at the End of the Street Everyone in the town knew the house at the end of the street. It was old, dark, and always silent. No one lived there anymore, and people said strange things happened near it at night. Most adults avoided the place, and children were told to never go close. One evening, Mark was walking home after visiting a friend. It was later than usual, and the street was almost empty. As he passed the old house, he felt a cold wind touch his face. Mark wanted to run, but curiosity stopped him. He took a few steps closer. The front door was open, and the light disappeared inside. Then, without warning, the door slowly closed by its...

The Day Everything Changed For most of his life, Daniel believed that success was something that happened to other people. He worked hard, followed the rules, and tried not to complain, but deep inside he felt stuck in a routine that never seemed to lead anywhere. Every morning looked the same, and every night ended with the same question:  Is this really all there is? One rainy afternoon, while leaving work later than usual, Daniel noticed an old bookstore he had never seen before. Curious and tired of rushing through life, he decided to step inside. The place was quiet, filled with the smell of paper and dust, and it felt strangely comforting. As he walked between the shelves, a small book with a simple cover caught his attention. The book was about people who had changed their lives not through luck, but through small, consistent decisions. Daniel bought it without thinking too much. That night, instead of scrolling on his phone, he started reading. The stories were hones...
